The deep red tea made from hibiscus flowers is not only refreshingly delicious, but also a drink rich in antioxidant anthocyanins and polyphenols that contributes to protecting cells against free radicals. It has a refreshing, tangy taste and is caffeine-free, so it can be enjoyed at any time of day.

Hibiscus is also a researched plant in terms of the cardiovascular system: according to several meta-analyses, regular consumption may contribute to supporting blood pressure within the normal range, primarily in people with mildly elevated blood pressure (the effect is moderate and research is ongoing).

100% hibiscus flowers in a 60-gram pack. Caffeine-free, additive-free, natural.

Effects and benefits:

Active compounds

Hibiscus is characterized by antioxidant flavonoids and anthocyanins (delphinidin and cyanidin derivatives), which contribute to protecting cells and vessel walls. It also contains small amounts of vitamin C and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron).

  • Antioxidant protection – anthocyanins and polyphenols contribute to protecting cells against free radicals
  • Cardiovascular system – researched – according to meta-analyses, regular consumption may contribute to supporting normal blood pressure in people with mildly elevated blood pressure (moderate effect, research ongoing). In studies, the beneficial effect appeared with regular consumption over several weeks (approx. 2–6 weeks) – it is not an immediate, one-off effect
  • Caffeine-free, refreshing – tangy, refreshing taste; can be enjoyed at any time of day, cold or hot

Directions for use:

One teaspoon (approx. 2 g) of dried hibiscus flowers for 500 ml of water. You can prepare it in two ways, depending on what you want to emphasize:

Cold brew – to preserve vitamin C

Steep the hibiscus in cold water for 1–2 hours or overnight, then strain before drinking. This method preserves heat-sensitive vitamins.

Hot infusion – to extract anthocyanins

Pour boiling water over the hibiscus, cover and let it steep for 10–15 minutes. This way the polyphenols, mainly anthocyanins and flavonoids, are extracted better.

You can drink the finished tea plain, or flavored with honey or lemon.

Good to know – practical tips

  • Tangy, acidic drink – hibiscus is relatively acidic; if you drink it often, it's worth rinsing your mouth with water afterwards to protect your tooth enamel
  • Mild diuretic effect – hibiscus may have a mild diuretic effect; pay attention to adequate fluid intake
  • Iron and meals – teas rich in polyphenols (including hibiscus) consumed with meals may reduce the absorption of plant-based iron; if your iron levels are low, drink it between meals instead
  • Regularity – in cardiovascular research, the beneficial effect appeared with regular consumption over weeks; occasional consumption is valuable mainly for enjoyment and antioxidants

IMPORTANT – contraindications and caution: Hibiscus is NOT recommended during pregnancy! Hibiscus is traditionally an emmenagogue (uterine-contracting) plant and may pose a risk to the fetus – so it should be avoided during pregnancy. During breastfeeding only on medical advice. Hibiscus may lower blood pressure, so caution is advised if you take blood pressure medication (it may enhance its effect) or have low blood pressure. Hibiscus may affect the levels of certain medications (e.g. paracetamol, diclofenac, some cholesterol-lowering drugs) – in case of regular medication or long-term medical treatment, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Do not consume in case of hypersensitivity.

UKKO Hibiscus Tea is a food product; its use is not a substitute for necessary medical treatment! Not recommended in case of hypersensitivity to hibiscus. If you have high blood pressure, the tea is not a substitute for medical treatment – do not stop your medication, and consult your doctor before making any changes.
